Couples & Relationship Counseling in Denver, CO
Polyamory, ENM, and kink-affirming relationship therapy from an AASECT-informed clinician.
Every relationship is its own experience. Whether you're a long-married couple, partners in a polycule navigating jealousy, kinksters working through a power dynamic that's lost its balance, or two people just trying to figure out if you should keep going — what you're holding is unique to you.
At Enkindle Counseling, couples and relationship counseling is offered with deep respect for the diversity of relationship structures real people actually live in. We specialize in non-traditional relationships: polyamory, ethical non-monogamy (ENM), and kink. We also work with traditional couples who want a therapist who won't impose narrow assumptions about what their partnership should look like.
What is Couples & Relationship Counseling?
Couples therapy is collaborative work that helps partners understand patterns, communicate more clearly, repair after rupture, and decide together what their relationship is becoming. It's not about a therapist taking sides or determining who's right. It's about creating a space where the relationship itself becomes visible — its strengths, its pain points, the dynamics that show up again and again — so partners can engage with it more consciously.
For relationships that exist outside the dominant cultural script (polyamorous, ENM, kink-engaged, queer, mixed-orientation, mixed-gender, asexual partnerships, and other structures), counseling has historically been hard to find without first having to educate the therapist on the basics of your life. We don't require that of our clients. The architecture of your relationships is starting context, not an obstacle to overcome.
Our Approach
Our couples and relationship work is informed by:
AASECT-informed sexuality work. Ryan is a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, which means questions of desire, sexual function, and erotic life are clinical territory we're trained for, not territory we route around.
Kink-affirming, poly-affirming, and ENM-affirming foundations. These structures don't get framed as the problem unless the partners decide they are. They're the context in which the relationship lives.
A trauma-informed, somatic lens. Relationship patterns often have nervous-system roots. We work with the body's responses, not just the words. (See Trauma Therapy for more on the somatic approach.)
Post-modern antiracist, decolonization, queer, feminist framing. Cultural narratives about what relationships should look like — who provides, who nurtures, who initiates, who waits — are inherited, not natural. Naming them is part of the work.
Who We Work With
We offer relationship counseling for:
Polyamorous and ENM partnerships, dyads, triads, polycules, and complex relationship structures
Kink-engaged couples and partners navigating power dynamics, scenes, or kink integration
Queer couples and chosen families
Mixed-orientation, mixed-gender, and trans relationships
Couples navigating affairs, ruptures, or major relationship transitions
Couples opening their relationship and seeking support through the transition
Couples closing their relationship and seeking support through separation
Asexual or low-libido partnerships
Long-distance partners
Traditional monogamous couples who want a therapist they don't have to filter themselves around
We are not the right fit for every couple. If there's active intimate partner violence in the relationship, couples therapy is generally not clinically appropriate, and we'll help you find more suitable resources.
Common Issues We Work With
Communication breakdowns and recurring conflicts
Sexual desire discrepancies and intimacy concerns
Jealousy, compersion, and the emotional landscape of polyamory
Kink dynamics that feel stuck, unsafe, or out of balance
Boundaries and agreements (negotiating, revisiting, breaking, repairing)
Affairs, betrayal, and trust repair
Major transitions: opening, closing, marriage, separation, parenting, illness, retirement
Family-of-origin patterns showing up in current relationships
What to Expect in Sessions
The first session brings everyone into the same conversation. Each partner has space to share what they're hoping for, and we map out together what we're working toward. Ongoing sessions are 50 minutes, with 75-minute sessions available on request — many couples and polycules find longer sessions helpful given the complexity of relational work.
All sessions are virtual via secure video. For polycules or relationships involving more than two partners, we'll discuss the most useful configuration of who attends together and what individual support looks like.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you work with polycules — more than two people in a session?
Yes. Multi-partner sessions are part of our regular practice. We'll discuss the structure of who attends which sessions during intake.
Are you actually kink-affirming, or just kink-tolerant?
Affirming. Kink dynamics are not framed as pathology in our work — they're framed as a context within which partners are living. We're equipped to discuss specific dynamics, scenes, and structures clinically.
My partner doesn't think we need therapy. Should I come alone first?
Yes — individual relationship-focused therapy is often a meaningful first step, both for clarifying what you want and for modeling the value of the work. Many couples eventually transition to joint sessions when both partners are ready.
We're considering opening our relationship. Can you help us prepare?
Yes. Opening a relationship is a significant transition with both relational and emotional dimensions. We work with couples through the entire arc: the conversations beforehand, the first agreements, the inevitable rough patches, and the ongoing recalibration.
Will you give us advice about what to do?
Generally, no. Our role is to surface what's there and help partners decide together. There are moments where we'll offer clinical observations or psychoeducation, but the choices about your relationship belong to you.
